Only in the world of sports economics can we nod at a deal that pays a kid in his early 20’s 6.75 million dollars a year and call it ‘reasonable’, but that’s how I see the deal the Flames reached with John Gaudreau.
It’s a far cry from the 8 million plus he was reportedly asking for, so that’s a win for the Flames. It’s right around the money Sean Monahan’s making, team win number 2. having their young core locked up at a reasonable number gives Treliving and company some flexibility to add players, once the albatross of Dennis Wideman’s contract is shed either during or after this season. Team win number 3.
For Gaudreau the deal gives him an option at unlimited free agency, a year after he first becomes eligible for it. And in that final year, he has a short list of 5 teams he can be traded to , sop at least the Flames can look at getting something for him if he decides to head East and return home. All in all, well done by both.
