A Toronto man has been charged with human trafficking in Calgary.
Police were contacted by a 30-year-old woman who said her boyfriend had forced her into the sex trade after their relationship became abusive. The woman alleges she was moved across the country for the past two years, expected to work as a prostitute. The man would allegedly advertise her services online and arrange meet ups with customers, then funnel money electronically into his own bank account leaving the victim with very little resources to support herself.
With police help, the woman was able to leave the sex trade while police launched a cross-Canada investigation resulting in the arrest of a man in London Ontario last month.
32-year old Shawn Powell Harris of Toronto has been returned to calgary to face charges including human trafficking, uttering threats, advertising sexual services, money laundering and cruelty to animals.
Harris will appear in Calgary court Friday
