Charges have been laid after the brutal assault of a Lethbridge woman on Friday.
A woman remains in critical condition in Calgary hospital after a passerby found her in an alley.
Investigators believe she was struck with a weapon, dragged into the alley and sexually assaulted.
They say a neighbour later approached them, saying he had found a man sleeping in his garage earlier, asking him to leave, but found some things had been stolen from inside the garage.
The victim’s father-in-law says it’s a crime that has touched a lot of people, inside and outside Lethbridge.
“We trust that the medical professionals are the best in the world,” he said Thursday. “Believe me, this is hard on them. They walk in, doctors who have been doing this for 30 years, and they break down in tears because they said it’s the worst case they’ve ever seen.”
“You can’t understand the gravity of how much this has made an impact on people’s lives.”
Investigators believe this was a random act of violence.
“Like everybody else, we find ourselves really concerned about what happened there,” Staff Sergeant Scott Woods said. “Having said that, Lethbridge is still a fairly safe city. These attacks do happen, but fortunately very infrequently.”
20-year-old Denzel Dre Colton Bird faces charges of attempted murder, aggravated sexual assault, sexual assault with a weapon, aggravated assault and break-and-enter.
