A number of local athletes brought home medals including Erica Wiebe’s gold in wrestling.
Athletes say they’re thrilled to be recognized by the city and were very happy with a group of school children waiting to get into council’s meeting got a chance to ask them questions about their accomplishments in Rio.
Alister McQueen, who picked up a silver in the triathlon in the Paralympic games, says he hopes his efforts can inspire some kids to get active and get into sport.
Akeem Haynes, who was part of the bronze medal 4 x 100 meter relay team with Andre De Grasse, says he’s always been involved with children and hopes his medal will teach the youngsters that “you can reach your dream.”
Erica Wiebe says she can’t believe it’s been over a month since competing and attaining the realization of her deepest dream.
She spent 15 minutes allowing a couple of dozen kids at city hall to each hold the medal.
