Patrons at a southwest Calgary restaurant tried unsuccessfully to prevent a suspected drunk driver from getting into his car last night. Police were called and officers responded immediately but not in time. Minutes later there was a head-on crash after the suspect vehicle crossed the median into oncoming traffic on 24th Street near Woodpark Avenue in Woodlands.
A man and a woman were taken to hospital with serious injuries following the crash. Both had to be extricated from the
Sergeant Joerg Gottschling with the Calgary Police Traffic Unit tells Global News, “I have sometimes have difficulty finding sympathy for the drunk driver who hits a pole and injures himself, but I have a great deal of sympathy for the innocent person who’s doing absolutely nothing wrong, driving home after work or something, and having someone come across the median and injure her. It doesn’t seem to stop.”
A man in his 60s was taken to hospital with critical, life-threatening injuries, and has since been upgraded to serious but stable. A woman, also believed to be in her 60s, was taken to hospital with serious but not life-threatening injuries.
