The Alberta government is smoothing over privacy worries raised about “robocall” reminders regarding vehicle registration and license renewals.
Sharon Polsky, President of the Canadian Association of Professional Access and Privacy Administrators, yesterday said once the information hops the border, it’s out of the government’s hands. “The company in the States, where the privacy laws really are not very effective, could be selling the information, could be renting it out, could be making money. We really have no way of knowing.”
However, Tina Faiz with Service Alberta maintains privacy is a primary concern. “The protection of Albertans information is a responsibility we absolutely take extremely seriously. That’s why our contract with this vendor clearly states that phone numbers can only be used for delivering this one-time call and the vendor cannot use the phone numbers for any other purposes.”
Faiz says the phone numbers the US company are using are not linked to names or addresses.
The calls remind Albertans to renew and register for email reminders for future renewals.
