A vigilant store manager saved a would-be scam victim yesterday.
According to a post on the Calgary Police Service Facebook page, a young new Canadian woman entered the Hillhurst Shoppers Drug Mart to buy $1,000 worth of iTunes gift cards, which raised red flags with the store manager, Caroline.
She had been trained to recognize when a victim may be falling for the “CRA scam,” where individuals are told that they owe the Canada Revenue Agency a specific amount of money that needs to be transfer to the scammer via gift cards.
Caroline got ahold of the police to reassure the almost-victim that she didn’t owe the government anything.
CPS thanked Caroline for her awareness, adding that the city is safest when the community and police work together.
