RCMP say it was a bomb threat that prompted them to evacuate all Prince Edward Island schools this morning.
RCMP spokesman Sgt. Kevin Bailey says the threat was sent by fax and that public schools on the island were notified within 10 minutes.
He says the threat suggested bombs had been planted at several schools and that they would be detonated.
Staff took 19,000 students from more than 60 schools to safe locations where they were met by buses and parents.
Several P.E.I post-secondary institutions were cleared out as well, and police are looking at the possibility the threat is connected to threats against three colleges in Nova Scotia.
