A man has been slapped with a $4,000 fine for stealing a fossil from the Burgess Shale in Yoho National Park.
A hiking guide reported seeing someone collected fossils near the Walcott Quarry. A park warden arrested the individual and found a fossil hidden inside a backpack. The man appeared in court in Golden on August 30th. The maximum fine for fossil theft is $25,000.
The Burgess Shale is one of the most significant fossil sites in the world. It preserves fossil evidence dating back over 500 million years. The area in Yoho and Kootenay National Parks was designated a World Heritage Site in 1980.
