They don’t make a lot of appearances in Calgary, but when they do, they sure get a lot of attention.
A few Calgarians have noticed giant water bugs, and not just in the water but even in some homes and businesses.
City Entomologist Jim Watts says they haven’t seen a population “boom” per se.
“Given the year we’ve had with all the rain and stuff, all the moisture we had in July and August, it’s not a surprise,” Watts said in a phone interview Monday. “I haven’t seen these things in years, so every odd year, maybe every four or five years, you might run into these things.”
Watts adds the bugs are aquatic predators, so it’s probably best just to leave them be, as they might “give you a good pinch.”
Watts doesn’t think we’ll see the bugs, which can get as big as 7 to 8cm, past a couple of weeks.
