Some concern about the number of rabbits inundating some areas of the city.
During Monday’s question period at city hall, Councillor Sean Chu said he has been getting a number of phone calls and emails about the large presence of feral rabbits in some of his neighborhoods.
He wanted to know if the city could do anything about the problem, but was told that the rabbits are considered wild, and so they come under the jurisdiction of Alberta Fish and Wildlife.
“The preponderance of rabbits out in the community are jackrabbits, for the most part, which are not domesticated rabbits,” Community Services and Protective Services General Manager Kurt Hansen responded, adding the city’s jurisdiction surrounds domestic rabbits only.
Chu brought up the issue with the Town of Canmore a few years ago, where officials tried trapping hundreds of rabbits, but resources ran out and they had to euthanize many of the animals.
