By my math, if the Stampeders beat the Esks tomorrow night, the battle for first place is essentially over. The Stamps will own the season series with every team, with Winnipeg the only Western opponent left on the schedule. Assuming the Lions beat Montreal tonight, a win tomorrow leaves the Stamps three up on second place with 7 to play. That’d mean the Lions would have to go 5-2 in the unlikely event the Stamps go 3-4.
Don’t try telling that to Dave Dickenson though. “There’s a tendency to relax, I’m working hard to make sure my guys don’t,” says the coach. “They have to understand it’s about getting better. It’s not about our record, it’s not about the other team. We need to be a better team, and that’s hard to do week in, week out. it really is.”
Fair enough. Top spot lock or not, Dickenson needs to keep his crew motivated for November. And I think that’s going to be an issue, because after tomorrow, the battle for first place could be done.
