It’s Labour Day and Gil McGowan, the president of the Alberta Federation of Labour, hopes we take a moment at some point today to think about what Labour Day actually means, other than it being the last long weekend of the summer.
McGowan says the federation realizes times are challenging in Alberta at the moment, but he also believes we are very fortunate to have the political atmosphere we currently have here.
“I think we should be thankful for the fact that we have a government at the provincial level that hasn’t made the economic downturn situation worse by imposing huge cuts, and indulging in austerity policies.
“We also have a government at the national level that basically says that in the face of recession, governments shouldn’t add to the pain already being felt by laying more people off. Instead, they should invest counter-cyclically by maintaining services, investing in public sector infrastructure, and that’s exactly what’s happening here in Alberta.”
McGowan also says we should thank the labour movement for ensuring that we still continue to enjoy a relatively decent standard of living, despite the current economic downturn.
