The Calgary Humane Society calls it malicious and cruel.
Someone put four kittens in a box, sealed it and left it in a dumpster. The discovery was made by some area workers in Dover this week.
Brad Nichols with the Humane Society says the kittens had no possible way of escaping, and if the person responsible is found the penalties could be stiff.
“Both the Animal Protection Act and the criminal code are in play here, and the reasoning for that is there was clear intent here to cause harm to these animals by taking away any escapability. The maximum fine under the Animal Protection Act, you’re looking at $20,000 and a possible lifetime ban from owning animals. With the criminal code on the table, that also puts incarceration out there as any option as well.”
Police and the Humane Society are looking for help from the public to identify the owner of the kittens.
“We need to link these kittens to someone in order to take it anywhere so it’s important that we’re able to identify if not who did this, who may have owned these animals prior.”
The cats are fortunately okay. Nichols says they probably weren’t in the dumpster very long.
Any tips should go to Calgary Police or Crime Stoppers.
