One of Alberta’s best known doctors is pleased to hear the province and it’s physicians have reached a tentative death that will see patient care improved, while reducing costs.
The deal is said to include a plan to pay doctors based on time of care, rather than the number of patients examined.
Alberta Liberal Leader, Dr. David Swann says has long been advocating for this.
“I’m glad they’re talking that way and they’re going to pilot hopefully some clinics that are going to be part of that capitation system, that provides incentives for better quality and spending more time with patients instead of just rushing them through. It’s long overdue. Ontario has 80% of it’s doctors on a blended capitation model, which moves away from the volume-driven payment that doctors have been getting for many years.”
There’s also word that there is a plan to put physicians in communities that need them.
Doctors still have to ratify the changes, so not a lot of details have been released by the province.
