The Hamilton Tiger Cats made a push but it was too little too late as the Calgary Stampeders hung on for a 30-24 victory.
The Stamps kicked off the scoring with a Rene Paredes field goal half-way through the first quarter before Hamilton responded with a touchdown pass from Zach Collaros to Terrence Tolliver giving the Ti-Cats a 7-3 lead. It looked like the Stamps would trail heading into the second quarter until Bo-Levi Mitchell hit DaVaris Daniels on a 76-yard strike on the last play of the 1st giving the Stamps a 10-7 lead.
It was a quiet second quarter that saw Rene Paredes continue his hot streak with two field goals one from 17 yards and another from 41 and the Stamps had a 16-7 lead at the half.
The third quarter was also a bit of a snoozer as the Ti-Cats would add one field goal cutting the Stamps lead to 7 heading into the fourth.
Cue the fireworks in the fourth.
First it was big Jerome Messam slamming one in from two yards out extending the Stamps lead to 24-10 (2.pt convert). 5 minutes later Rene Paredes would hit fourth of the night giving Calgary a 27-10 lead and the game looked all but over. It wasn’t over for the Ti-Cats however as Collaros would hit Tolliver again for his second touchdown catch of the night bringing Hamilton within 10. After a quick series by the Stamps, Collaros drove the Ti-Cats down the field and hit Luke Tasker for a touchdown and after a 2 point convert and it was a 3 point game. The Ti-Cats would attempt the onside kick but kicker Brett Maher had a little to much leg kicking it out of bounds, giving the Stamps great field position. Rene Paredes would take advantage of that field position drilling a 40 yarder for his 5th of the game, giving Calgary a 6 point lead they would never relinquish.
Bo-Levi Mitchell was 27-37 for 323 yards and one TD.
Next up for the Calgary Stampeders is the Labor Day Classic against the rival Eskimos, a special 2 hour pre-game show Monday September 5th goes at 11 am with Kickoff set for 1.
