A three member panel reviewing Workers Compensation in Alberta has been asked to consider including CFL players for coverage.
The CFL Players Association made the request as the panel collected input from across the province this summer.
Executive Director Brian Ramsay says a football field is a workplace just like any other in Canada, adding players should be treated just like any other worker.
He says CFL contracts are not guaranteed meaning, if a player is hurt, the team doesn’t have to pay them anymore. That is why he says the players would like WCB coverage.
Ramsay says the CFLPA may also consider applying for WCB coverage in other provinces, depending on what happens in Alberta.
The WCB panel is expected to present its final recommendations to government next spring.
