The federal government has appointed a special mediator in an attempt to prompt some movement in the contract talks at Canada Post.
Labour Minister MaryAnn Myhychuk offered the mediation service last night with both sides in the dispute still far apart.
Mihychuk expects both sides to work with the mediator to avoid a strike or a lockout.
The Canadian Union of Postal Workers has until midnight tonight to serve the Crown corporation with a 72 hour strike notice.
As of last night the union was accusing Canada Post of stalling talks by making unacceptable demands.
If this mediation doesn’t work, the union could give formal notice of a strike that would disrupt mail delivery by Monday.
