Long time Liberal M-P Mauril Belanger has lost his battle with Lou Gehrig’s disease.
Belanger, who won his seat in Parliament eight consecutive times, fought a very public battle with A-L-S after being diagnosed only last November.
He died Tuesday night.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau calls Belanger “a great friend, tireless M-P and brave fighter.”
Interim Conservative leader Rona Ambrose called him a friend and a “great parliamentarian,” adding she will miss him.
Belanger made national headlines in January when he re-introduced his private members bill on gender neutral lyrics for “O Canada.”
He wanted the line in the anthem that says “in all thy sons command” changed to “in all of us command”.
The Commons passed the bill in June.
Mauril Belanger was 61.
