On the surface, you have to wonder what GM John Hufnagel is doing?
Stampeders traded international DB Fred Bennett and back up national DB Jeff Hecht to the Saskatchewan Rough Riders today for two undisclosed negotiation players.
Bennett joined the Stamps in 2012 and played 73 regular season games. He recently lost his starting job to Ciante Evans. Hecht also joined the Stamps in 2012 and was a member of the 2014 Grey Cup Championship team.
The bottom line is the Calgary Stampeders have depth and this move opens up much needed salary cap space. The Riders are in a desperate situation opening the season at 1 – 6 and these players will help them in the short term.
It’s unfortunate, the CFL does not release the names of the negotiation list players, but we have learned from Hufnagel in the past that he is a shrewd trade master. I am sure teh two players acquired will be in Calgary down the road.
