Less than a week after a notorious serial rapist was released in Calgary, he is back in custody. Global News has learned James Alexander Parent was arrested last night.
Last Friday police warned the 58 year old Parent was was living downtown after being freed from jail on statutory release. At the time, police warned that Parent was a high risk to re-offend.
In 2011, Parent was sentenced to 10 years in jail for a long string of offences including sexual assault with a weapon, sexual assault causing bodily harm, forcible confinement and uttering threats to cause death. With time served he had only 7 years left behind bars and was eligible for mandatory release after serving two thirds of that time.
One of his victims tells Global news she’s “ecstatic” at word of the arrest, adding, “There couldn’t be better news.” In 1987, Parent broke into the woman’s house, tied her up and repeatedly sexually assaulted her.
The reason for his arrest Thursday has not been disclosed at this point.
