Not good enough.
A $60,000 fine and a $26,000 salary cap hit for the Riders flaunting the roster rules so blatantly? C’mon! A team with the resources of the Riders can pay the fine with out-of-pocket cash. And the salary cap hit? The organization has been hit four different times for salary cap violations, paying dollar-for-dollar fines each time for their transgressions. I’m not seeing that lesson sinking in.
It’s easy to blame all of this on Chris Jones, because the guy’s just not likable. But history makes it clear the organization has little regard for rules it can buy its way out of. The commissioner had the discretionary power to suspend one or more team officials for their part in the ‘pre-practice squad’ scam. He did not. He did not have the power to take away draft picks in this situation. He needs it.
Any rule is only effective to the level it’s enforced. The CFL needs to get the power, and use it. To me, a penalty with teeth would have been a suspension for Jones, and the forfeiture of ALL of the Riders’ picks next year.
Rider Pride? Proud of what? Getting away with it time and again?
