The NDP is getting wrapped on the knuckles by the P-C party for proposing that taxpayers fund political parties in the next election campaign.
A motion in the Select Special Ethics and Accountability Committee recommended that taxpayers reimburse political parties and candidates 50% of their expenses if they receive at least 10% of the vote.
It passed by a count of 8-6.
Tory MLA Richard Starke says it shows how out of touch the NDP is with everyday Albertans at a time when a lot of people are out of work.
He says he can’t believe they would propose yet another tax.
The recommendation now gets drafted into the Election Finances Act which will be brought before the legislature this fall for a vote.
