With all the concerns about what’s in the water in Rio…..you’d be forgiven if you thought Michael Phelps had been attacked by a giant squid. they guy’s covered in perfectly round red blotches, but rather than the mark of some mythical sea creature, it’s an ancient Chinese practice linked to acupuncture that involves suction cups…and is supposed to ease pain and help with recovery.
Whatever floats your boat I say. Breathe-right strips, Kinesio tape, hyperbaric chambers, through the years athletes have turned to any and all wild ideas for anything that helps with the healing and may or not give them an edge. Not a lot of them seem to have long term staying power (Ya Ya, cupping;s been around a long time. I’m talking as an athlete fad) but hey, it ain’t Steroids, HGH, or EPO. With this kind of therapy, hard science may be hard to come by but if you think it’s making you feel better, that’s good enough.
