A highly-publicized private member’s bill is now in effect.
Back in November, MLA Deborah Drever introduced the bill, aimed at making it easier for domestic violence victims to get away from the abuse.
Survivors can now end a lease early without financial penalty, by giving their landlord a certficate verifying that they’re at risk.
To get that certificate, a tenant must go to the Human Services ministry with an emergency protection order, peace bond or a statement from a certified professional, including a doctor, nurse, social worker or psychologist.
Drever says finances should never be a barrier in fleeing violence.
YWCA Calgary CEO Sue Tomney says the rule changes addresses stressors and gives women some of the supports they need to get out of abusive relationships.
