Gotta confess I’m a little tuckered this morning. 8 o’clock start, post game show, wind down at home, 430 alarm to work the Morning News. But that’s OK. As much fun as I have covering the Stampeders and the CFL, that’s my job. That’s what I’m paid to do.
But what about you? Between text, tweet, call ins and just talking to people at the game, I can’t hearing anyone saying what an awesome idea a late kickoff on a Thursday night is. Ya ya, TSN doesn’t want to go head to head with the opening ceremonies in Rio, and they pay the CFL a ton of money for the rights. That deal’s a game changer for the league, and helps teams stay healthy so they can put on the product we love. But when did it stop being about the fan in the stands? Last night’s crowd was good at 28 thousand plus, but those Rider games should be a sellout or darn close to every time. Too many people are telling me late starts and non-weekend games are keeping them at home.
The schedule’s been a bit of a mess this year. Monday night football (On a night the Jays were off) Wednesday night football (Almost Thursday morning by the time they got rolling) and late night Thursday games? Come on!
One of the big issues facing many sports leagues these days is convincing the fan base to get off the couch and away from the 60 inch 4K surround sound and come to a game. I don’t think midweek late nighters is the way to do it.
