A missing 8-year-old girl from Calgary has been located near Abbotsford, B.C. and her 19-year-old brother his facing charges.
Police say the child’s family woke up to find the girl, her brother and the family vehicle all missing from their Greenview home early Wednesday morning.
They contacted police and later in the day the family vehicle was spotted on the highway just outside of Hope, B.C.
Mounties moved in and took the girl and her brother into custody without incident further down the highway. The girl was not injured.
Staff Sergeant Rob Davidson with the Domestic Conflict Unit says police are anxiously waiting to speak with the accused, to determine what was behind the incident.
“It is a key part of the investigation that’s still going to need to occur,” Davidson told reporters on Thursday morning. “At this point, we have no idea what the motivation is.”
“The lack of motivation, the lack of planning, lack of history, lack of contact with the family, all those things started really making us believe that this person wasn’t able to safely care for an eight-year-old,” Davidson continued.
An AMBER Alert was nearly issued in this case, however the child was located before investigators were able to determine whether the case met the criteria for one.
Names of the individuals will not be released.
