Back in June city council approved a change to downtown parking rates and today those changes take effect.
On-street parking rates in three zones now go into effect two hours earlier at 7am.
The areas affected are between 9th Avenue and 3rd avenue from 1st. St. S.E. to 8th St. S.W.
Mike Derbyshire with the Calgary Parking Authority tells Global News the move is intended to free up more parking.
“Once occupancy hits a threshold of 80 per cent, so that means there’s no turnover basically, we then use charge parking to manage the supply and demand. People will have an opportunity to actually find places to park in those areas at that time because the charge parking motivates people to move their cars around a little more often.”
There will be a one week grace period before tickets are handed out.
The Calgary Parking Authority has a complete list of the changes.
