The final Calgary firefighters fighting the massive wildfire dubbed “The Beast” in Fort McMurray have all now returned home.
The last group arrived around 7 O’clock Tuesday evening.
Senior Firefighter Patrick O’Neil says as they flew in, they saw the large burn areas that scarred the town:
“As we landed and took our transportation back to the place we were staying, saw quite a bit of devastation on the ground. Lots of houses burnt.”
Captain Hank Huculak says Fort McMurray is pretty devastated by there’s still optimism:
“The community is really strong. Everybody is in good spirits. Everybody is super supportive. We’re very impressed with the local firefighters. Those guys are really tired and they’re still doing a really professional job.”
O’Neil described the entire situation there with one word, “strength” commenting on the resiliency, durability and courage of the people in Fort McMurray.
