A comment on Facebook by MLA Derek Fildebrandt about Ontario’s Premier brought swift action from the party. Fildebrandt has been suspended from the Wildrose caucus with party leader Brian Jean issuing a release just before midnight in which he said, “This evening, Mr. Fildebrandt made an unacceptable comment on social media that does not represent the values of the Wildrose caucus.”
The suspension followed a comment on Fildebrandt’s official Facebook page congratulating the Strathmore-Brooks MLA on telling the truth about “”Mr Wynne or whatever the hell she identifies as,” a reference to Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne who is openly gay. Fildebrandt replied to the post that he was “Proud to have consituents like you.”
Hours later, Fildebrandt tweeted that he had misread the original comment which was “100 per cent against my views.” He apologized saying he felt terrible at the thought that anyone in the LGBTQ community thought he shared the original commenter’s views.
Fildebrandt’s suspension comes after an incident in the Alberta Legislature Thursday in which members of the Wildrose were criticized for their treatment of Wynne while she was an invited guests in the house. As Wynne looked on from the gallery she was ridiculed by Fildebrandt as the leader of a failed, debt-ridden enterprise.
