Congratulations to Team Canada for their gold medal win. In particular congratulations to team General Manager Brad Treliving and communications ace Sean Kelso. Both earning medals for the victory.
But time, Brad, to put he medal in a place of prominence on the shelf. The Flames heavy lifting begins. In no particular order, he must:
+Hire a coach to replace Bob Hartley. Right now there are only two vacancies in the league (here and Anaheim), so Treliving will have time to select the right candidate. But, not too much time.
+Find a number one goaltender. This will likely take place at the draft. However, the time to lay the foundation for a possible draft day move is now. San Jose didn’t just wake up draft day morning and decide Martin Jones might help them. Plenty of legwork was done in advance.
+Sign Johnny Gaudreau and Sean Monahan to new deals. What are the comparables? Bridge or long-term deals? All these factors must be considered as the July 1 deadline looms.
+Then there is the regular business of tendering contracts, possible buyouts, the NHL combine and finalizing draft lists.
So congrats to Treliving. Admire that medal today. Because there won’t be many more opportunites to gaze at the prize!
