It’s a hard sight to see for many, but the Alberta government has released an app that allows Fort McMurray residents to see damage from the massive wildfire.
It’s warned that images should not be used for official damage assessment as structures that appear to be standing should not be considered undamaged.
The current resolution of the satellite images indicates only which areas were most severely damaged. Danielle Larivee, Minister of Municipal Affairs says higher-resolution pictures will be released in the days ahead.
“Having been through a devastating fire and evacuation myself, I know firsthand how stressful it is to wait for updates on which homes have been lost. We are committed to providing information to residents as soon as we can, and these images will help us begin to answer the questions people have about the state of their homes and community.”
Preliminary re-entry planning is underway and a schedule for re-entry is expected within two weeks.
