As if being forced from their homes wasn’t bad enough, those at Edmonton Northlands reception centre are facing more misery.
Dr. Chris Sikora, Edmonton’s Medical Officer of Health says an illness outbreak is sweeping through the evacuees. “What we’ve seen over the weekend is 40-50 cases of what appears to be viral gastroenteritis. People presenting with nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. Most of the time when we see these things it tends to be quite transmissable, people can transmit this from person to person.”
Sikora says all reception centres are being monitored, but there’s no word of other outbreaks. People affected tend to recover in about three days. Those who are ill are being isolated.
AHS officials are adding more hand sanitizer, urging those at the shelter to be diligent about hand washing and giving a thorough cleaning to all washrooms and showers.
