Done, done and done. Received my census form in the mail yesterday and being the type of person who doesn’t like things to hang around sat down at my computer and completed it in less than ten minutes. Now I was fortunate that I didn’t receive a long form census, however, even if I had I would have completed it. I believe in the census and questioned why people made such a stink about the long form census. It was a nice political ploy by the former Conservative government to play to the fears of people who saw it as as threat to their privacy yet have no problem sharing pictures and personal information on social media.
However, as much as I see the need for the census I still have some advice to the government to win over some of its critics. First of all maybe change the wording on the front of the Census envelope “Complete the census-it’s the law”. As a parent I know my kids are more likely to buy into any of my plans if I put a positive spin on it. Example of a bad approach “Clean your room because I said so” . Example of a more positive approach “Clean your room and we’ll be able to go to the park”. So Liberal Government how about instead of “Complete the census-it’s the law” let’s go with “Thanks for completing the census. We’ll now be able to make future decisions based on hard data as opposed to where we want to get more votes”. Or better yet let’s throw in a tax credit to all Canadians who complete the census. I’ve been compelled to do a 30 minute telephone survey just to get a thirty dollar cheque. There is a way to get people onside with this whole census thing. It’s all in your approach.
