A framework deal has been signed between the province and northern first nations who fall under Treaty 8.
The deal creates working groups to deal with issues like healthcare, education, and infrastructure.
It was signed by Premier Rachel Notley and Deputy Grand Chief Isaac Laboucan-Avirom at the legislature.
Notley says the framework is designed to chase problems early rather than react to them.
Laboucan-Avirom says the change is needed, adding that his people are receiving a second-class education and are not getting the full financial benefit from natural resources on their land.
Treaty 8 was signed in 1899.
