I’m afraid Calgary NEXT as it stands may have breathed its LAST Wednesday as the City basically thumbed its nose at the plan.
Oh well….back to the drawing board.
Wherever we go from here, one idea I hope blows up on the launch pad is a suggestion more lipstick on the McMahon pig will keep the stadium viable.
” the stadium has acurrent projected life span of 25 to 30 years should approximately $2 million be invested instructural and mechanical systems. An investment of approximately $37 million for
improvements to the existing concourse would improve user experience and address the
majority of current user convenience issues. Execution of all proposed amenity
improvements would represent an investment in the range of $69 million to $89 million.”
No no no. A thousand times no. McMahon has had its time. If the NEXT proposal as it stands is dead, let’s look at the city’s idea to build a fieldhouse at Foothills. Lemme get this straight. Build a stand alone fieldhouse AND spend up to 90 million on McMahon? Stop me when that sounds insane. OK, that’s now.
If Foothills is to be the home of the fieldhouse, then why not build it with an eye to a stadium/fieldhouse complex that can host many different world class events? Public money for public benefit, as the city says, with private money from the CSEC to give the Stampeders and their fans a facility they can be proud of.
Is this a workable plan B?
