A clash of two lobby groups is expected today for a city hall committee meeting on the southwest Calgary BRT transitway proposal.
The Transportation Committee is meeting with members of the Ready To Engage group opposed to the plan and the I Love YYC Transit group planning competing rallies outside city hall. Mayor Naheed Nenshi is hoping things stay calm. “With the committee, I hope they will chat in a factual manner having read the report that they’re commenting on. And I do hope that they will be civil and keep themselves to what is before the committee.”
Ready to Engage delivered a petition against the transitway yesterday. Nenshi, who has bristled at the group’s past actions, dismissed the petition saying it was a waste of time and money since it didn’t actually ask council to do anything. He added a third of the names on the petition were people who lived outside Calgary or didn’t supply complete information and so were ineligible.
