A Northern Alberta man who brutally beat and sexually assaulted a young girl on the Paul Band First Nation has been sentenced to ten years behind bars.
22-year-old James Clifford Paul was given the sentence by a judge in Stony Plain Monday afternoon, after Paul previously pleaded guilty to aggravated assault and sexual assault.
Paul was originally charged with attempted murder in the December 2014 attack.
Crown Prosecutor Jason Neustaeter says the girl will never be the same.
“I know that she’s been receiving 24-hour supervision, she’s receiving therapy,” Neustaeter told reporters after the sentencing on Monday. “She’s able to attend school but only with assistance.”
Paul showed little emotion as the sentence was handed down.
He was also given credit for two years for time already served.
