Our federal and provincial governments are on a spending spree as we are going to spend our way out of this recession. Education, Health, Public Sector, Tourism, Culture, Arts – line up for your hand outs! Sport? Not so fast, you go to the back of the line.
I find it very sad when the federal government is going 30 billion in debt and our provincial government is going 10 billion in debt and Sport/Recreation is one of the only things taking a hit.
the provincial budget released earlier today shows sport/recreation being cut $800,000. Granted, not a lot of money in the grand scheme of things, but it’s close to 5 million over the last two years. So much for promoting a healthy lifestyle.
At this point, I am not sure how this cuts will affect sport in this province, but it’s certainly not going to help. Could the future of the Alberta winter and summer games be up in the air? Maybe the government will upset the seniors and cut the 55 plus games? I know let’s stick it to our high performance athletes and wipe out the Podium Alberta money. Funny how every politician wants a photo op with athletes after they win a big event, but let’s not support them financially.
Anyway, Ricardo Miranda is the Minister of Culture and Tourism. Sport is also under his watch. He sent out a one page letter to all of his stake holders earlier today and as you might expect, sport did not get a lot of love. Here is the letter from Mr. Miranda.
