A very interesting story in Iowa this morning as Drew Tate made a guest appearance in his old college hood of Clinton. He told a local reporter he wants to be a football coach and he would love to coach for his old NCAA team. He even hinted “sooner rather than later.”
“I want to be a coach, and coach for the Hawks,” Tate said. “I want to be that, but I don’t know if I am that. I hope I can mold into that. It’s a special place.
“I want to be a quarterback coach,” Tate said. “Honestly, I want to be a head coach. I wouldn’t mind being a graduate assistant/intern on the defensive side. If Coach has an opening, I will be there.”
As you might expect, this sent a few shock waves around Calgary. Tate is under contract for the 2016 season, but don’t forget he was asked to take a significant pay cut in the off season. Bryant Moniz took over the short yardage duties for the Stampeders last season and the organization has high hopes for U of C prospect Andrew Buckley.
So do I see a scenario where Tate walks away from the Stampeders this spring? Sure, anything is possible. However at this point, there is no job offer on the table for Drew in Iowa.
