My favourite Rexall Place memory? Easy. May 31st, 1987. 24 years old and covering my first Stanley Cup final. Game 7 of a hard fought battle between the Oilers and the Flyers, and with the Oilers up 2-1 late, Glenn Anderson blows one past Ron Hextall to put it away, building that been holding its breath explodes in a din I haven’t heard before or since.
Favourite Dome memory? Weeeeelllll……I’m gonna sit on that, because sadly, the Dome is still present tense, and that farewell story swap is still a long way off. I’ve tried to stay optimistic about Calgary NEXT, but I have to admit that hope may be fading. Latest misstep? Word Murray Edwards is moving to London because of taxes here. I make no secret of the fact I’m good with the funding formula proposed for the new facility, but this news provides easy propaganda for opponents who wonder why any public money should go to this thing, when a key member of ownership doesn’t want to pay taxes here.
I want that new building. Let’s see plan B, because I think plan A is circling the drain.
